Diversity of the metalloprotease toxin produced by enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis.
Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) strains produce a 20-kDa zinc metalloprotease toxin (BFT) associated with diarrheal disease of animals, young children, and adults. BFT stimulates secretion in intestinal loops in vivo and modifies epithelial cell morphology in vitro. The B. fragilis toxin (bft) gene from ETBF strain 86-5443-2-2 (piglet; bft-2) revealed significant nucleotide and pred...
متن کاملActive efflux of norfloxacin by Bacteroides fragilis.
Norfloxacin was actively pumped out by Bacteroides fragilis, which is intrinsically resistant to most fluoroquinolones. Reserpine moderately inhibited the efflux. A one-step spontaneous mutant had increased resistance to norfloxacin, ethidium bromide, and puromycin, a result suggesting that the efflux is catalyzed by a multidrug pump with specificity similar to that of NorA/Bmr.
متن کاملAccumulation of norfloxacin by Bacteroides fragilis.
The accumulation of norfloxacin by Bacteroides fragilis NCTC 9343 was determined by the modified fluorescence method. The time required to achieve a steady-state concentration (SSC) after allowing B. fragilis to accumulate norfloxacin in an aerobic or an anaerobic environment was approximately 2 min; the SSC achieved in air was 90.28 +/- 9.32 ng of norfloxacin/mg (dry weight) of cells, and that...
متن کاملDetection of enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis by PCR.
Strains of enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) are associated with diarrhea in young farm animals and, at least in particular settings, in children. Enterotoxin production by ETBF is currently detected by a tissue culture assay with HT-29 cells. We have developed a PCR assay based on the detection of the enterotoxin gene to identify ETBF in culture and in stool samples. Overall, 113 bac...
متن کاملCharacterization of cephalosporinases from Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and Bacteroides vulgatus.
The susceptibility of 80 Bacteroides fragilis group strains isolated from clinical specimens to beta-lactam antibiotics was investigated by agar dilution method. Twenty strains showed high resistance to the antibiotics. The resistance level of the isolates to cephaloridine was related to the amount of beta-lactamase activity (cephalosporinase; CSase) produced. B. fragilis GN-11477, B. thetaiota...
